The Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village Walking Trail

Put on your walking shoes and enjoy an online multimedia tour of the Town of Cambridge Athlete’s Village Precinct.

2022 marks the 60th Anniversary of the VIIth British Empire and Commonwealth Games!

This historic event heralded a turning point for Western Australian economy, tourism and identity within the nation as it put Perth on a world stage. The Games necessitated a massive overhaul of State infrastructure, communications networks and community services in order to accommodate the 863 competitors, 210,000 spectators and the hundreds of support staff and media personnel who descended upon the City of Perth.

The Walking Trail provides an overview of the Perth’s road to the Games as well as lived experiences of athletes and local community members who assisted to make the Games an international success.

The Trail can be enjoyed as a self-guided, fully online experience, taking you on a tour of the precinct that was set aside to accommodate the teams competing in the 1962 Games

Larger A3 copies of the Walking Trail Map can also be obtained from Cambridge Library.

The Trail can be walked two ways.

The route marked out in blue is a slightly more strenuous walk that takes in some of the wonderful views of the City Beach coastline and Iwan Iwanoff’s iconic 1960s architecture.

The route marked out in yellow is a gentler route that takes in City Beach’s tree-lined streets before rejoining the longer walk at Stop 9.

The historical content and distance covered by both walks is virtually the same.

Allow 1.5 hours to walk the full circuit.

Access historical information at each Stop by hovering your smartphone camera over the QR Code on the Map and click on the wordpress.com link that appears.

SEE YOU AT THE GAMES!
